Volvo EX30 spotted on India roads ahead of launch next month

Upon launch, Volvo EX30 is expected to rival electric SUVs such as Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Expect it to be priced between Rs 40 and 45 lakh (ex-showroom).

Volvo is gearing up to launch the EX30 in India next month. The EX30 is the Swedish carmaker’s most affordable electric car globally which sits below the EX40 and EC40 in the lineup. Like EX40 and EC40, Volvo is most likely to locally assemble the compact battery-powered SUV in India at the company’s facility in Hosakote, near Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Ahead of its launch in August, a test mule of the upcoming Volvo EX30 was caught on cameras. The prototype was spotted testing on the Jaipur-Delhi highway. Interestingly, it was spotted carrying a temporary registration plate in White colour registered under a Haryana RTO.

The latest test mule was seen wearing a full camouflage, although the design of the car evidently a Volvo with its signature vertical LED taillamps with pixelated treatment running across the D pillars. Up front, the EX30 resembles the flagship EX90 with a sealed-off grille flanked by Volvo’s signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights. The machine-cut, dual-tone alloy wheels on the side gives the SUV a good road presence. Like the global-spec model, the charging flap is on the rear left quarter panel.

Volvo EX30: Features & Powertrain

Inside the cabin too, the Volvo’s traditional interior layout is carried over with its minimalist theme. It gets a dashboard that houses a 12.3-inch vertically mounted touchscreen infotainment display that runs on Volvo’s Google-based system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety features are likely to include ADAS tech, multiple airbags, and a 360-degree camera system.

Volvo EX30 is based on parent company Geely’s SEA platform, which is also shared with the Jeep Avenger EV. Internationally, EX30 gets three powertrains and two different battery options. The India-spec version is likely to get the larger 69 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery which is available in both single-motor and dual-motor variants. The former claims to return a range of 474 km on a single charge.
