Toyota has unveiled the new Hilux MHEV in Europe. A mild hybrid version of the popular pickup truck, the Hilux MHEV for European markets will be manufactured in Thailand. Earlier this year, Toyota started testing prototypes of the Hilux MHEV in Africa.
Toyota Hilux mild hybrid: What’s new?
The biggest change is an updated 2.8-litre diesel mill which now gets a 48V mild hybrid setup. This powertrain has been in development for quite some time now and is one of the few electrified diesel power mills in the mass market segment. The 48V mild-hybrid setup consists of a battery, an electric motor generator, and other components.
Toyota assures that the integration of mild-hybrid technology will not compromise the off-road and towing capabilities of the pickup truck. The Japanese auto giant further adds that components for the mild-hybrid setup have been strategically placed, which allows for a water wading depth of 700mm.
According to Toyota, this configuration will provide better torque assistance, smoother start/stop functionality, regenerative braking, and up to a 10% increase in fuel efficiency compared to pure diesel powertrains. Certain reports reveal that this mild hybrid setup will be reserved for the top-spec variants of Hilux, while the lower trims will get it at a later stage.
It’ll also be interesting to see if there’s a bump in power and torque outputs of this 2.8-litre oil burner. Currently, this motor pumps out 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque in Hilux. Transmission duties on this engine are carried out either by a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
Toyota Hilux mild hybrid: Expected India launch
Besides Europe, the Hilux MHEV will make its way to South Africa, Australia and ASEAN markets in the near future. There are chances of the mild hybrid pickup truck launching in India too but not in the immediate future. Instead, Toyota might opt for the same technology in the upcoming new-gen Fortuner slated to make its global debut in the next couple of months.
