The compact SUV segment is heating up, with competition intensifying even before summer arrives. Skoda recently entered this sub-4 meter market with the launch of the Kusaq, and deliveries are set to begin on January 28. Not to be outdone, Kia India is gearing up to launch its second compact SUV, the Syros, on February 1st, following the success of the Sonet. This promises to be an exciting period for SUV enthusiasts as these two brands vie for dominance in this popular segment.

Skoda and Kia have recently disclosed the fuel economy figures for their respective compact SUVs, the Kylaq and the Syros. According to ARAI certification, the Kylaq achieves 19.68 kmpl with the manual transmission and 19.05 kmpl with the automatic. The Syros offers two engine options. The turbo petrol variants return 18.20 kmpl with the manual and 17.68 kmpl with the automatic. On the other hand, the diesel Syros delivers 20.75 kmpl in manual guise and 17.65 kmpl with the automatic transmission. 

The Skoda Kylaq is powered by a 1-litre turbocharged petrol engine generating 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. It comes with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. 

Meanwhile, the Syros’ 1-litre turbo petrol engine produces 118 bhp and 172 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Unlike the Kylaq, the Syros also offers a diesel variant equipped with a 1.5-litre engine that delivers 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. This diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission torque converter.

Skoda Kylaq vs Kia Syros: Features and Safety

The Kylaq is the first compact SUV to feature six-way adjustable driver and passenger seats with ventilation. The cabin is designed with a dual-tone colour scheme, and the top variant will come equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment system, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and rear air conditioning vents. The base model will offer a more traditional setup, including an analogue driver’s console and a digital touchscreen.

Skoda has set a new benchmark in safety with its impressive Bharat NCAP ratings. The Kylaq scored 30.88 out of 32.00 for adult occupant protection and 45.00 out of 49.00 for child occupant safety, making it the safest vehicle in its class. It comes equipped with over 25 standard safety features, including six airbags, traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Disc Wiping, Roll Over Protection, Motor Slip Regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, passenger airbag deactivation, Multi-Collision Braking, ISOFIX seats, and much more.

The Kia Syros boasts a premium feature set, including segment-first innovations like six parking sensors (with side sensors), flush door handles, and a 30-inch integrated display encompassing infotainment, driver instrumentation, and virtual climate controls. It supports OTA updates and features a highly versatile rear bench with 60:40 split, recline, and slide functions, offering ventilated seating for the squab while providing 4-way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat.

The Syros prioritises safety with radar-based Level 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and multiple driving modes. Enhancing driver confidence, it includes a built-in dash cam, disc brakes on all wheels, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and hill-hold assist.

Skoda Kylaq vs Kia Syros: Price

Kia India will launch the Syros on February 1, so we’ll have to wait for the full pricing details. In contrast, Skoda has already revealed the prices for the Kylaq. The Kylaq is available in four distinct variants — Classic, Signature, Signature+, and Prestige
