The subcompact SUV/crossover segment is a thriving space in the passenger vehicle market with numerous options to consider. As a result, it is one of the most competitive segments in the PV market. In order to stay relevant, OEMs have to constantly update their offerings.

A new subcompact SUV has been spotted, images of which have circulated over the internet. The fully camouflaged test mule shown in the spy images can be seen wearing a red coloured registration plate registered in Tamil Nadu. In our opinion, it could be the facelifted iteration of either Nissan Magnite or Renault Kiger.

A logical presumption is the fact that both OEMs are based out of the same facility in Oragadam near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. In fact, both models are platform siblings and share a lot in common between each other. It is difficult to predict exactly which model it is at this point. Both above-mentioned models are due for a mid-cycle facelift.

For reference, Nissan Magnite was first launched in India in December 2020 whereas Renault Kiger was launched a month later. Both Kiger and Magnite lie at the affordable end of the sub-4 metre SUV segment. While Kiger is priced between Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11.23 lakh, Magnite is available within a price range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11.27 lakh (both ex-showroom).

The images don’t reveal any specific visual details apart from contemporary looking 5-spoke alloy wheels, a receding roofline, a roof-mounted spoiler, and rectangular LED taillights. As for specs, both SUVs are powered by the same petrol engine options– a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated unit and a 1.0-litre turbocharged mill. The former churns out 71 bhp and 96 Nm of peak torque whereas the latter kicks out 99 bhp and 160 Nm (152 Nm with AT) of torque.

Transmission options include a 5-speed manual as standard for both engine options in addition to an 5-speed AMT  and a CVT automatic for the naturally aspirated unit and turbocharged mill, respectively. More details regarding the updated SUV is expected to be available in the coming months.
