The fourth-gen Suzuki Swift made its global debut at the last edition of Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo this October. The hatchback has now gone on sale in its home market. Let us check out how the new fourth-gen Swift stacks up against the current-gen Swift on sale in India, in terms of engine specs, fuel economy and prices.
New-gen Swift Vs current-gen Swift: Engine specs
As previously reported, the fourth-gen Swift will be powered by a brand new 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine from Suzuki’s Z series engine. This engine puts out 81 bhp at 5,700 rpm and a peak torque of 108 Nm at 4,500 rpm. In addition, this motor is paired with an optional 48V mild-hybrid setup featuring a DC synchronous motor and battery that adds 3 bhp and 60 Nm to the overall output.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Japan-spec Swift is more frugal than its Indian counterpart with an average consumption of 23.4 kmpl and 24.5 kmpl for hybrid and non-hybrid variants, respectively, on the WLTP cycle. Like the current model, we expect Maruti to offer a CNG derivative of the new-gen Swift when it is launched in India.
Engine specs | New-gen Suzuki Swift (Japan-spec) | India-spec Maruti Swift |
Displacement | 1,197cc, 12-valve, 3-cylinder DOHC engine | 1,197cc, 4-cylinder DOHC engine |
Power | 81 bhp | 89 bhp (Petrol) / 77 bhp (CNG) |
Torque | 108 Nm | 113 Nm (Petrol) / 98.5 Nm (CNG) |
Transmission | 5-MT / CVT | 5-MT / 5-AMT |
Fuel Efficiency | 24.5 kmpl (mild-hybrid) / 23.4 kmpl (regular petrol) (WLTP claimed) | 22.38 kmpl (MT) / 22.56 kmpl (AMT) / 30.90 km/kg (CNG) |
While Suzuki retains the 5-speed manual transmission, the AMT gearbox in the outgoing Swift makes way for a CVT automatic unit. Further, the Japan-spec Swift is also offered with an all-wheel drive option which isn’t likely to come to India.
New-gen Swift Vs current-gen Swift: Prices
Prices for the new-gen Suzuki Swift in Japan starts from 1,922,800 yen and goes up to Rs 2,087,800 yen (approximately Rs 11 lakh to Rs 20 lakh). The Japan-spec model is available in three trims– XG, MX (hybrid) and MZ (hybrid). However, when launched in India, the prices are likely to differ due to small changes in specs.
