Mileage face-off: Skoda Kylaq vs Maruti Suzuki Brezza

The Skoda Kylaq is set to start with deliveries on January 28. The compact SUV, whose prices were announced last November, is poised to compete with the segment leader, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Unlike the Brezza, which offers a CNG variant, the Kylaq is only available in petrol. Skoda has revealed the fuel economy of its most affordable offering in India, and here’s a comparison with the Brezza to see how it stacks up.

India’s automotive market is highly price-sensitive and mileage-conscious, making fuel economy a key factor in the compact SUV segment. The Skoda Kylaq is offered with two transmission options — a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic torque converter. Skoda claims the manual variant delivers a fuel efficiency of 19.68 kmpl, while the automatic variant offers 19.05 kmpl.

On the other hand, the Brezza, the reigning king of the sub-4-metre SUV segment, comes with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic torque converter. The entry-level manual variants, LXI and VXI, offer 17.38 kmpl, while the higher-end ZXI and ZXI+ variants deliver a mileage of 19.89 kmpl. The Brezza automatic is rated at 19.80 kmpl. Additionally, the Brezza also has a CNG model that boasts an impressive fuel economy of 25.51 km/kg.

Both the Skoda Kylaq and Maruti Suzuki Brezza come equipped with a single engine option and feature a front-wheel-drive layout. The Skoda Kylaq is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 114 bhp at 5,000–5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 178 Nm at 1,750–4,000 rpm.  

In contrast, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza relies on a more conventional 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 101.6 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 136.8 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm.
