Tata Motors recently launched the 2025 Altroz update starting from Rs 6.89 lakh, ex-showroom. The Altroz is the only premium hatchback, which is available in three powertrains, naturally aspirated petrol, diesel and CNG. The Tata hatchback goes up against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the doppelganger, Toyota Glanza and Hyundai i20.
The Indian automobile manufacturer has now revealed the Altroz diesel and the CNG’s fuel economy. Tata still has to reveal the Altroz petrol’s mileage. We take a look at how it fairs against the competition.Â
Tata Altroz vs Maruti Baleno vs Hyundai i20: CNG mileage comparison
Let’s start with Altroz CNG, which is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 72.4 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 103 Nm at 3,500 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed transmission though there are reports that it might get an AMT option in a couple of months. The Altroz CNG claims to return a mileage of 26.90 km/kg.

Both the Baleno and the Glanza are powered by the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 76.4 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 98.5 Nm at 4,300 rpm and comes with a 5-speed manual transmission. The two Japanese twins return a superior mileage of 30.61 km/kg.
These hatchbacks get a smaller single CNG cylinder capacity of 55 litres, while the Altroz comes with a 60-litre dual-cylinder CNG tank. In the case of the i20, Hyundai does not offer a CNG option.Â
Tata Altroz vs Maruti Baleno vs Hyundai i20: Diesel mileage comparison
The Altroz is the lone ranger in the diesel field in this class. It is powered by a 1.5-litre engine which churns out 88.7 bhp at 4,000 rpm and a healthy 200 Nm at 1,250 – 3,000 rpm. It is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission. According to Tata Motors, the Altroz diesel returns 23.60 kmpl.

Tata Altroz vs Maruti Baleno vs Hyundai i20: Petrol mileage comparison
All three hatchbacks are powered by a 1.2-litre cylinder, but only the Altroz gets a 3-cylinder engine, while the other two are 4-cylinder motors. The Altroz’s 1.2-litre petrol engine makes 86.7 bhp and 115 Nm of torque. The i20 and the Baleno churn out 81.8 bhp and 114.7 Nm and 88.4 bhp and 113 Nm respectively. The i20, on the other hand, offers a mileage of around 20 kmpl for the CVT and 5-speed manual variants.
