Many auto manufacturing OEMs, worldwide and in India, are often under scanner for not complying with the mandated norms by government bodies. In the latest development, Mercedes-Benz has been found guilty of not adhering to the pollution control guidelines set by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

This revelation is particularly troubling given Mercedes Benz’s esteemed position in the automotive industry. MPCB said in strong words that as a leader in automotive innovation, Mercedes-Benz is expected to set an example in sustainable production practices. The current non-compliance with environmental standards is a significant concern and a deviation from what is expected from such a prestigious brand.

In response to this, the MPCB has instructed its regional officer to take immediate action to ensure that the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant located just outside Pune, complies with all MPCB guidelines. This will involve a comprehensive review of the plant’s operations and the implementation of necessary corrective measures. As an immediate action step, MPCB has forfeited the carmaker’s bank guarantee of Rs 25 lakh.

Speaking on this development, Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman, MPCB, said, “We are committed to upholding high environmental standards and ensuring that all industrial activities within our jurisdiction adhere to pollution control regulations. We expect full cooperation from Mercedes Benz in addressing these issues promptly.”

Mercedes-Benz is a global leader in the automotive space and one of the largest players in the luxury segment of the Indian car market. The company has released its official statement which says, “Mercedes-Benz is in its 30th year of operations in India, with the state-of-art manufacturing facility in Chakan in its 15th year of operations, which is a benchmark in automotive manufacturing in India.”

The statement further says, “The company sets high priority to adhere to the most stringent global standards in production quality, to uphold high environment and sustainability practices and to comply to mandatory regulations and requirements.” The German marque goes on to claim that it hasn’t received any written notice or formal request from MPCB describing the claimed violations.

Mercedes says that it is ready to cooperate with the authorities and present all the required processes and documentation, and take any corrective actions, if required. Meanwhile, MPCB has also deleted its original tweet regarding the matter.
