German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has put the AMG GT on a diet, and the result is the AMG GT 43, which uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine instead of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. The new entry-level AMG GT 43 may sound like it has lost its appeal, but no.

Mercedes-AMG GT 43: What is it?

Downsizing the engine in the AMG GT has its advantages. The car is lighter, weighing 1,775 kg compared to the GT 63’s 1,895 kg. This has made the entry-level AMG GT 43 more agile, giving it better handling. Also, coupled with rear-wheel steering, makes the baby GT fun around the twisties, and the CEO says, “will put a smile on your face”.

The engine is from the AMG A 45 S, which makes 415bhp and 500Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed gearbox, and the power is sent to the rear wheels only, instead of all all four wheels like the GT 63. In terms of acceleration, the GT 43 takes 4.6 seconds, 1.4 seconds slower than its larger V8 sibling.

Apart from the change in performance, the new GT 43 gets 19-inch wheels instead of 20-inch wheels the GT 63 gets. The styling is also less aggressive compared to the GT 63, while most mechanical components are similar to its larger sibling. As for its India launch, there is no confirmation yet.
