Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a new model on September 3. Earlier believed to be the facelifted Grand Vitara, it was later learned that it will be a brand new SUV with a new moniker. Reports suggested that this SUV is likely to be called “Escudo”, for which the company filed a trademark some time ago.
Moreover, this new SUV will most likely be sold via Maruti’s Area range of showrooms, unlike the Grand Vitara which is retailed through Nexa showrooms. Codenamed Y17, this new SUV will be the company’s flagship offering for the Arena range. Ahead of its debut, let us look at what to expect from the upcoming SUV rumoured to be called Escudo.
Maruti Suzuki upcoming SUV: Expected Design
Test mules of this mid-size SUV have been spotted on several occasions in the last few months. The spy images suggest a similar silhouette, profile, and size as seen in the Grand Vitara. However, the front and rear ends appear to be redesigned featuring new headlamp and taillamp designs. In fact, the lighting elements look inspired by Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. A new alloy wheel design is also a strong possibility.

Maruti Suzuki upcoming SUV: Expected Interiors & Features
Previous spy images have hinted at a completely revised dashboard layout featuring a much larger flat touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. We also see a healthy dose of chrome around the AC vents, justifying its flagship tag. It must be noted that it will be a 5-seater SUV, contrary to rumours that suggested a 7-seat layout.
In terms of features, the Maruti SUV will be kitted with creature comforts such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, ambient lights, automatic climate control, electric sunroof, 360-degree camera, and more. Safety will be taken care of by six airbags, electronic stability programme, ABS with EBD, and cruise control.
Maruti Suzuki upcoming SUV: Expected Powertrain
The upcoming SUV will be underpinned by the Global C platform, same as Brezza and Grand Vitara. Hence, the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine will be carried forward to this SUV that puts out 103 bhp and 137 Nm of peak torque. This engine can be had with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. This motor is also available in CNG guise that produces 87 bhp. A strong hybrid powertrain at this point seems unlikely.
