Maruti Suzuki sales slump in every segment, apart from one — Here’s a look at June 2025 sales

Maruti Suzuki has seen a slump in sales across its range, apart from one. But what hurts the most is the decline in its core segment.

In June 2025, Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, saw a slump in sales, witnessing a negative growth of 13 percent in the domestic market. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,18,906 units in June 2025, as compared to 1,37,160 units sold during June 2024. What is interesting, though, is the decline in every segment apart from one, despite SUVs gaining popularity in India.

Taking the period between April–June 2025 also saw Maruti Suzuki’s sales decline, registering sales of 3,93,572 units in the domestic market as compared to selling 4,19,114 units during the same period last year.

Maruti Suzuki’s Mini+Sub-compact segment – comprising the Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR – registered sales of 60,591 units in June 2025, as compared to 73,444 units sold in June 2024, witnessing a 17 percent decline.

Maruti Suzuki’s UV segment – comprising the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6 – saw sales of 47,947 units as compared to 52,373 units sold in the previous June, a decline of 8.4 percent. With SUVs gaining popularity and carmakers such as Mahindra climbing up the ladder in terms of sales, this is something to note.

However, what is interesting in Maruti Suzuki’s sales in June 2025 was the sales of the Ciaz — a car that’s at the end of its life. The Ciaz recorded sales of 1,028 units as compared to a mere 572 units sold in June 2024.

The small car category — What’s troubling them?

The small car category was once popular in India and Maruti Suzuki offered not one or two, but a plethora of choices to customers, which established the carmaker as a leader in India. Over the years, stringent emission and fuel efficiency norms have led to decline in sales.

Now, Maruti Suzuki is pushing the government to ease these fuel efficiency norms for small cars, as the sales of this segment do not account for even 50 percent of the carmaker’s sales.

Speaking to PTI, MSI Senior Executive Officer Rahul Bharti said, “The slowdown in passenger vehicle sales is largely due to a sharp decline in the smaller segment cars. Historically, passenger vehicle sales used to grow at 1.5 times the GDP growth. But now, even after 6.5 per cent GDP growth, the car market is nearly flat.”

“This is because the once mass small car segment is not participating in the growth at all, he added. “This is clearly an affordability issue,” said the Senior Executive.
