Maruti Suzuki launched the brand new fourth-gen Dzire in India a couple of days ago. The Dzire has been one of the highest-selling models for Maruti as well as in the passenger vehicle market and easily the best-selling sedan in the country. Priced between Rs 6.79 lakh and Rs 10.14 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Dzire gets significant upgrades over the existing model.
A favourite among both private consumers and fleet and cab operators, the Dzire has gracefully evolved over the years. Let us look at all iterations of the Maruti Dzire over the years.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire: First generation (2008 – 2012)
Maruti launched the first Dzire, which was called the Swift Dzire, in 2008. Based on the first-gen Swift, the Dzire carried all the elements of its hatchback counterpart including headlights, and body panels. In fact, it was essentially a Swift with an extended boot and Maruti exported the same as Swift Sedan in many markets. It was introduced with a 1.3-litre petrol engine and a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine which came paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire: Second generation (2012 – 2018)
The second generation of the Swift Dzire was launched in 2012 and like the first-gen model, the new Dzire was based on the Swift, this time the second-gen model. Almost all components of the sedan were borrowed from its hatchback sibling, the only differentiation being the extended boot in the former. It even has the exact same wheelbase as the Swift.
This iteration of the Dzire gained a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The 1.3-litre oil burner continued. Transmission options included a 5-speed manual as standard and a 4-speed torque converter automatic for the diesel engine.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire: Third generation (2018 – 2024)
Things started to change from the third generation which launched in 2018, when Maruti renamed the car as “Dzire” dropping the “Swift” nameplate altogether. Although it continued to be based on the Swift (third generation), the exterior of the Dzire was very different from the latter with different headlamp, grille, and alloy wheel designs. Further, the body panels of the new Dzire were different from those on the Swift.
The sedan was now underpinned by Suzuki’s Heartect platform shared with multiple Maruti models like Swift, Wagon R, and Baleno. Not only was it a better looking car, it was also a much more feature packed vehicle than its predecessor, enhancing the Dzire’s premium and upmarket feel. Features like a touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were a new addition to the sedan.
It carried over the same engine options as second-gen Dzire but dropped the diesel unit from its lineup after the BS6 norms kicked in from 1 April 2024. It also gained the option of an AMT gearbox for the petrol mill.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire: Fourth generation (2024 – present)
The latest iteration of Dzire takes it a notch higher with its design, build quality, and features. Not only does it look classy but it is a much safer car than its predecessors. The new Dzire was recently awarded a five-star safety rating by Global NCAP.
In its latest version, the Dzire gains premium features like LED headlights and taillights, electric sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, tyre pressure monitoring system, and wireless phone charger.The new Dzire also gets a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
