Maruti Suzuki continues to set new benchmarks in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Although the Indo-Japanese carmaker doesn’t hold an overwhelming 50 percent of the market share anymore, it remains the highest-selling carmaker in the country by a distant margin.
The carmaker has now achieved a new milestone, clocking 2 million units of production in a calendar year. This was the first instance when a car manufacturer has achieved this figure in India. It is also the first occasion where any unit of Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global automobile manufacturing facilities has breached this landmark.
Maruti Suzuki 2 million production
The 2 millionth Maruti unit was an Ertiga which rolled out from the production line at the company’s manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana. Out of the 2 million units produced 60% were manufactured in Haryana while 40% were made in Gujarat. The top five models manufactured in 2024 are Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, WagonR and Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki currently operates three manufacturing facilities: two in Haryana (Gurgaon and Manesar) and one in Gujarat (Hansalpur). Together, these facilities have a combined annual production capability of 2.35 million units. The company has decided to expand its production capabilities to 4 million units per annum with more demand anticipated in the near future and more models incoming.
The first plant in the Kharkhoda site with an annual capacity of 2.50 lakh units is expected to be operational in 2025. Once fully operational, the Kharkhoda facility will have a planned capacity of 1 million units per year. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is planning another greenfield facility with an annual capacity of 1 million units and is in the process of identifying a suitable location for this new facility.
Maruti Suzuki has also increased its exports over the years, and now accounts for almost 40 percent of the total exports in the passenger vehicle market. In fact, Maruti Suzuki has been the highest exporter in the country for the last three years. The company exports 17 models to around 100 countries worldwide. The top export models include Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Dzire and Swift.
