Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has marked a significant milestone in green logistics with the inauguration of India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding at its Manesar manufacturing facility. The project, aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, was inaugurated by Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini.
Developed under the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC), this new railway siding is a part of a 126-kilometre corridor connecting Sonipat to Palwal. Executed by the Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Limited (HORCL)—a joint venture with key stakeholders including HRIDC, HSIIDC, GMDA, AllCargo Logistics, and Maruti Suzuki—the Manesar facility marks MSIL’s second such terminal, following its success in Gujarat.
Spanning 46 acres within the Manesar plant, the electrified facility features 4 full-length tracks and an engine escape track, totaling 8.2 km of rail infrastructure. It includes a two-storey station, electronic interlocking, and dedicated pathways for operational staff. Once fully operational, the siding can dispatch up to 450,000 vehicles annually to 17 hubs across 380 Indian cities as well as to key ports like Mundra and Pipavav.
Boost to sustainability and Net Zero goals
MSIL’s investment in this green infrastructure is approximately Rs 452 crore— Rs 325 crore for HORC development and Rs 127 crore for the internal yard. According to Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 175,000 tonnes and save 60 million litres of fuel annually at full capacity. This is in line with Maruti Suzuki’s goal to achieve 35% of vehicle dispatches via rail by FY 2030-31, supporting India’s Net Zero target for 2070.
The new terminal also supports the company’s adoption of the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework 3.1 for transparent reporting of logistics-related emissions. Since FY 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki has dispatched over 2.5 million vehicles via rail, reinforcing its commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action.
With the HORC project slated for full completion in the next 5–6 years, the Manesar siding stands as a flagship for integrated, eco-efficient mobility, setting a benchmark for the automotive and logistics sectors nationwide.
