The second generation Mahindra Thar has been a raging success in the Indian market ever since it burst onto the scene in 2020. For a lifestyle off-roading SUV which clocks an average monthly sales 5000 units regularly, it speaks volumes about the new Thar. It is the one of the vehicles that came with an open/convertible top giving it a proper lifestyle SUV vibe.
However, that is about the change as Mahindra has cut short the Thar lineup. According to Autocar India, the Chakan-based automaker has discontinued certain terms from the Thar range including variants such as Convertible Top, AX 4WD, and LX with open differential. This has reportedly resulted in discontinuation of 8 variants from the Thar lineup bringing it down to 11.
Variant | Ex-showroom |
1.5L Diesel AX (O) RWD Hard Top | Rs 11.50 lakh |
1.5L Diesel LX RWD Hard Top | Rs 12.99 lakh |
2.0L Petrol LX 2WD Hard Top | Rs 14.25 lakh |
2.0L Petrol LX 4WD Hard Top | Rs 15.20 lakh |
2.0L Petrol LX Earth Edition 4WD | Rs 15.40 lakh |
2.2L Diesel LX 4WD Hard Top | Rs 15.95 lakh |
2.2L Diesel LX Earth Edition 4WD | Rs 16.15 lakh |
2.0L Petrol LX AT 4WD Hard Top | Rs 16.80 lakh |
2.0L Petrol LX AT Earth Edition 4WD | Rs 17 lakh |
2.2L Diesel LX AT 4WD Hard Top | Rs 17.40 lakh |
2.2L Diesel LX AT Earth Edition 4WD | Rs 17.60 lakh |
Buyers looking for the AX trim can opt for the rear-wheel driven AX (O) variant that comes with the 1.5-litre diesel engine. While Mahindra still lists the Convertible Top (CT) variants on the website, the recent reports suggest that the company has stopped accepting orders for these variants.

Hence, styling changes on the updated Thar will include a redesigned front grille with double-stacked slots, C-shaped LED elements in headlights and tail-lamps, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and new alloy wheels.
