It may be the world’s worst-kept secret but Mahindra is all set to officially unveil the much-awaited Thar 5-door on August 15th. The good news is that before the launch, there are fresh sets of new images of the Thar and this time it isn’t the usual camouflaged vehicle. The latest spy images reveal the Thar 5-door’s front design and side profile. Here’s all we know so far about the Mahindra Thar 5-door.
Mahindra Thar 5 door: Design
The leaked images reveal an eye-catching red Thar 5-door, which reminds us of the rugged two-door Mahindra Classic from the 90s’, but new, improved and definitely more brawny. After seeing a lot of test mule images, now the new front grille is fully visible. Apart from getting a completely new front fascia, the 5-door Thar sports a 6-slat grille instead of a 7-slate one like the current 3-door version.

The new design is more aggressive as the grille slates are thicker, wider and more prominent. The front sledgehammer-like front bumper is now in silver colour instead of an all-black one in the current Thar. The foglamps continue to be nestled in the bumper while the indicators are separately placed on the wheel arches.
As reported earlier, the 5-door Thar gets new all-LED headlights with C-shaped LED DLRs. The side profile’s design remains pretty much the same apart from its length and the additional rear doors. The 5-door Thar is expected to get tweaked LED tail lamps along with its signature with the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.Â
Mahindra Thar 5 door: Features
The major updates in the Thar 5 door will be the all-digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, some tweaks in the cabin quality and Level 2 ADAS suite like the flagship XUV700 and the 3X0. An update in brakes is also expected with the new Thar 5-door sporting all-four disc brakes, while the 3-door gets only front two disc brakes. As Mahindra is looking to slot this as a premium 4×4, the Thar 5-door will get a lot of comfort features like front ventilated seats and connected technology.
Mahindra Thar 5 door: Competition and Price
The Thar 5-door or the Thar Armada will be available in two drivetrains, rear-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive. On paper, it will go up against the recently launched Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Suzuki Jimny, but the Thar 5-door is expected to be a more premium vehicle and could even directly rival the Scorpio N. Like its three-door version, it will retain both the 2-litre petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel engines and both will be available in manual and automatic transmissions.
According to reports, the entry-level RWD Thar 5-door could be priced from Rs 15 lakh and the top model could be around Rs 30 lakh similar to its sibling, Mahindra Scorpio N.
