It is no big secret that Mahindra & Mahindra have invested heavily on development of electric vehicles (EV) as future mobility solutions. A year and a half back, the company revealed its roadmap for EVs in India and showcased a wide range of concepts which will take form as full production models in the coming future.
The Chakan-based automaker has now filed a patent for its upcoming coupe electric SUV and an image of the same has gone viral on the internet. However, it is difficult to presume which exact model is shown in the patent filings. For the uninitiated, Mahindra has two battery-powered coupe SUVs in development– XUV.e9 and BE.09.
Mahindra electric coupe SUV: Design
In Mahindra’s official EV website, the XUV.e9 is listed under the ‘Products’ section whereas the BE.09 is listed under the ‘Concepts’ category. This suggests that the former is closer to production whereas the latter is still at an initial stage of development. However, going by the patent image, the design looks very similar to the BE.09 concept showcased in 2022.
Small visual details like the flat front face surrounded by gloss black bezels and the slim LED strip that bend inwards on the lower end of the bumper are unique to the BE range of EVs. Another differentiating feature seen on the design patent are the camera-based ORVMs which are reserved for the BE range of electric SUVs. The XUV range, on the other hand, gets traditional ORVMs.
Alloy wheel designs further support the theory of the patent image representing the BE.09. Other visual details like the squared-off wheel arches, a sculpted bonnet, a blacked-out roof and most importantly a sharp receding coupe roofline is common to both XUV.e9 and BE.09. Mahindra calls the BE range of SUVs as Sport Electric Vehicles.
Besides styling, the other major common highlight between the XUV.e9 and BE.09 is the INGLO architecture on which both the BE and XUV range of EVs are based. This modular skateboard platform can incorporate multiple drivetrains and battery packs, thus, underpinning a wide range of future electric SUVs from Mahindra.
Mahindra XUV.e9, BE.09 expected launch
While BE.05 and BE.07 are likely to make their debuts in October 2025 and April 2026, respectively, Mahindra hasn’t yet confirmed a launch timeline for BE.09. On the other hand, XUV.e9 is expected to hit markets in the first half of 2025. However, the first launch born electric SUV to come from Mahindra will be the XUV.e8, which is slated to make its global debut at the end of this year.
