German-spec Skoda Kylaq spotted testing, gets all four disc brakes

In India, Skoda Kylaq locks horns with Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO to name a few.

Skoda launched the Kylaq in November 2024 and has been welcomed with favourable reviews all across the industry. The subcompact SUV became the highest selling model from the Czech carmaker in March, dispatching 5,327 units across India. The Kylaq has effectively sidelined Kushaq, Skoda’s previous best-seller in India.

While Kylaq is an India-centric product, the popularity of the sub-4 metre SUV has prompted Skoda to consider it for European markets as well. This can be verified by the latest spy shots courtesy of gopi_rm published at Team BHP forum. The images, reportedly clicked in Germany, shows an uncamouflaged Kylaq which carried a Czech number plate.

The unit was a right-hand driven Kylaq which confirms it was built by Skoda in India. However, what separates it from the India-spec model are the disc brakes at the rear wheels. This can possibly lead to two significant developments. The mule could be an export-spec version of the Kylaq for global markets or a more powerful version of the SUV with a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine under the hood.

Another possible change are larger 18-inch alloy wheels. The India-spec model gets 17-inch units. Inside the cabin, the Kylaq prototype had a laptop hooked into it, most probably to evaluate certain performance parameters. The exterior of the Kylaq spotted in Germany remained identical to its Indian counterpart. Although the Kylaq in its current form is a very well-equipped car, the Europe-spec might gain a few additional comfort and safety features.

In India, Skoda Kylaq is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI turbocharged petrol engine that kicks out 114 bhp and 178 Nm of peak torque. This motor is paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. If the Europe-spec model gets the more potent 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged petrol unit, the SUV will develop 148 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. This can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
