Mercedes-AMG has expanded its product lineup with the introduction of three new mild-hybrids – the CLS53, E53 Coupe and E53 Cabriolet. All three will feature EQ Boost starter-alternator and 48-volt electrical system. Mercedes says that the EQ Boost electric starter/alternator fitted between the engine and transmission helps the AMG CLS53 accelerate from 0-100 km/h in an estimated 4.4 seconds. It adds 21 hp and 249.4 Nm. Basically, the electric motor spins the auxiliary compressor, which builds up boost early in the rev range before the larger exhaust gas turbocharger gets going. The CLS53, E53 Coupe and E53 Cabriolet will go on sale in late 2018 as 2019 models.
The electric motor’s power is additional to that produced by the new 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine featuring twin turbocharging by means of an electric compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger. The engine, which also powers the facelifted S500, develops 429 bhp at 6100 rpm and 519.2 Nm of torque from 1800 rpm to 5800 rpm.
Mercedes-AMG CLS53, E53 coupe and E53 cabriolet get the AMG Speedshift nine-speed transmission with paddle shifters and AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive. The three feature drive modes that adjust engine response, transmission, suspension and steering. Mercedes-AMG 53 series will come equipped with air suspension with adaptive damping and self-levelling as standard.
In terms of design, the 53 triplets will get the twin-blade radiator grille in chrome, along with the front splitter and air intakes that are chrome as well. Also, the rear bumper has been redesigned.
On the inside, Mercedes-AMG CLS53, E53 coupe and E53 cabriolet have received the typical AMG treatment with the first thing to catch the eye being the twin 12.3-inch ‘Widescreen Display’ with a central dial, steering wheel and voice control.
The seats are covered with a wide range of materials ranging from faux leather, faux suede, premium leather or Mercedes’ top-tier Designo leather in various colours and patterns. For the hard parts, customers can choose from wood, piano black lacquer and carbon fibre.
