With Delhi’s AQI (air quality index) at 402, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage III of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan). CAQM stated, “Keeping in view the prevailing trend of air quality, in an effort to prevent further deterioration of the air quality, the sub-committee decided that all actions as envisaged under stage III of the GRAP, ‘Severe’ air quality (DELHI AQI ranging between 401-450), be implemented in right earnest by all the agencies concerned in the NCR, with immediate effect, in addition to the stage I and II actions already in force.” In total, there are four stages of GRAP based on the AQI level.
We list down what vehicles are banned and the ones that can ply on the road.
Delhi Air Pollution: What is banned?
To keep a check on the rising air pollution, the Delhi Government has banned BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel vehicles from plying on the roads. This rule also applies to the surrounding areas of the national capital including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Old diesel buses can’t operate and diesel trucks cannot enter the national capital. If any of these vehicles mentioned are found plying on the road in Delhi, one will have to pay a fine of Rs 20,000.
Currently, only BS-6 vehicles, emergency services, public transportation, police and government vehicles are exempted from Stage III of GRAP.
CAQM has advised residents to avoid driving for short distances, use public transportation or shared mobility and if possible, work from home.
