SUVs continue to dominate the Indian automobile market with over 50 per cent of the passenger vehicle segment. With the SUVs flooding the streets, manufacturers are also updating the vehicles with new and improved safety features. Here are the five most affordable SUVs that come standard with six airbags.
Hyundai Exter
Hyundai Exter is the most affordable compact SUV that’s packed with six airbags as a standard feature. It offers other features like ISOFIX anchorages for child safety, a dash camera, an anti-locking braking system with EBD, a tyre pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability management, a rear parking camera, electronic stability control and hill start assist control.
The Exter is available in petrol and CNG. It is powered by a 1.2-litre engine which produces 82 bhp at 6000 rpm and 113.8 Nm at 4000 rpm and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. The CNG model, on the other hand, churns out 67.7 bhp at 6000 rpm and 95.2 Nm at 4000 rpm and comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Nissan Magnite
Nissan only sells only two vehicles in India, the Magnite and the X-Trail. The Magnite is one of the first compact SUVs to offer six airbags as a standard feature. It also comes with a 360-degree camera, auto-dimming internal rearview mirror, rear parking camera, vehicle dynamic control, traction control system, hill start assist, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), tyre pressure monitoring system and dash cam.
The Nissan SUV is offered in two engine trims — the 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol and the 1-litre turbo. The former churns out 71 bhp at 6250 rpm and 96 Nm at 3400 – 3600 rpm while the turbo makes 98.6 bhp at 5000 rpm and 160 Nm at 2800 – 3600 rpm.

Skoda Kylaq
The new kid on the block in the compact SUV joins our list. The Skoda Kylaq comes standard with safety features like six airbags, hill hold control, electronic differential locking system, traction control system, brake disc wiping — a first in the segment, ABS with EBD, rearview camera and ISOFIX for rear seats.
The Kylaq is available with a single engine — 1-litre turbo petrol with 114 bhp at 5000 – 5500 rpm and 178 Nm at 1740 – 4000 rpm. It is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic torque converter.

Hyundai Venue
The Venue has an ace up its sleeve. Apart from offering six airbags as standard, the top model also has a Level 1 ADAS safety function. It is equipped with a dash camera, ABS with EBD, brake assist system, tyre pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability management, a rear parking camera, electronic stability control and hill start assist control.
It is available in three engine options — 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The turbo petrol and diesel make 118 bhp and 172 Nm and 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque respectively. The NA engine has the same output as the Exter.Â

Kia Sonet
Based on its cousin, the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Sonet, is a more upmarket and sporty version of it which is targeted at younger car buyers. It offers the same safety features as the Venue including the Level 1 ADAS and is available in three powertrains.Â
