BYD Seal EV launched at Rs 41 lakh– gets up to 650 km range

BYD Seal EV will go up against the likes of Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV 6 and Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Build Your Dreams (BYD) has officially launched its third electric vehicle (EV) in India. Named Seal, the electric sedan is offered in three variants namely Dynamic Range, Premium Range, and Performance. Prices for the Seal range between Rs 41 lakh and Rs 53 lakh (both ex-showroom).

Bookings for Seal have already commenced since February 27 at a token amount of Rs 1 lakh both online and at BYD’s dealerships. The coupe electric sedan is being offered with an 8-year/1.6 lakh km warranty for the battery pack, an 8-year/1.5 lakh km warranty for the electric motor and motor controller, and a 6-year/1.5 lakh km warranty for various other battery-related modules.

BYD Seal: Exterior Design

The four-door coupe-style sedan gets sleek LED headlamps up front with V-shaped LED DRLs. The rear end is adorned with slim wraparound LED tail lights at the rear. Its  sweeping and aerodynamic design results in an impressive aero drag coefficient of 0.219 Cd. The car rolls on 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels with petal-like design a petal-like design.

The swooping roofline gives it a coupe-like profile. The side skirts and lowered stance further lends the car a sporty appeal. Buyers can choose from four exterior paint schemes namely Cosmos Black, Aurora White, Atlantis Grey, and Arctic Blue. In terms of dimensions, Seal EV measures 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,460mm in height. Wheelbase of the battery-powered sedan stands at 2,920mm.

Inside the cabin, the Seal EV gets a unique dashboard with multiple creases and curves. Taking centre stage is a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s instrument cluster. Another prominent highlight is its multi-functional steering wheel with the ‘BYD’ branding. It gets a boot space of 400 litres and a 53-litre cargo volume for the frunk.

The Seal EV is loaded with creature comforts such as all-glass roof, heated front seats, wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker audio system, two wireless charging pads, 8-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, dual-zone climate control, air purifier, and a panoramic sunroof to name a few.

Safety inside the car is bolstered by the presence of nine airbags, seat belt reminder and pretensioners, rear and front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, traction control, ABS with hill hold assist, etc. In addition, the Seal EV benefits from ADAS features like Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Rear Collision Warning, etc.

BYD will offer the Seal EV with a choice of three electric powertrain combinations comparing two battery pack options— 61.44kWh and 82.56kWh. Both batteries get BYD’s patented blade technology. The former is available with a rear-wheel drive, single-motor setup that churns out 201 bhp and 310 Nm of peak torque. This version of the Seal claims a 510 km range.

On the other hand, the 82.56 kWh battery— offered in the Premium Range, and Performance trims— are available with a single-motor setup in the former and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup in the latter. The Premium Range trim claims a peak single-charge range of up to 650 km whereas the Performance variant returns a range of 580 km on full charge.

As for performance, the top-spec Seal can sprint to 100 kmph from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds with  a top speed of 180 kmph. Using a 150 kW DC fast charger, the battery juices up from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes. Based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Seal EV is armed with the world’s first Cell-to-Body (CTB) and iTAC (Intelligent Torque Adaptation Control) technologies. 

BYD Seal: Benefits of booking in March

BYD says that customers booking the Seal EV by March 31, 2024 will be entitled to benefits like a 7 kW charger installed at home, 3 kW portable charging box, vehicle-to-load power supply unit, 6-year roadside assistance, and one complimentary inspection service.
