The all-new BMW 5 Series recently broke cover in India in the long wheelbase format which will take on the upcoming Mercedes Benz E-Class which will also be offered in the long wheelbase version. As of now, we only know a few specific details about both these luxury saloons.
However, one thing that stands out for both the models is that they have grown in size. So let us check out how both these models compare against the Audi A6, another German mid-size saloon, which has been a perennial rival to the 5-Series and E-Class in the standard formats. It also gives us an idea how much the upcoming BMW and Merc have grow in size.
5 Series LWB Vs E-Class LWB Vs A6: Dimensions
Dimensions | BMW 5 Series LWB | Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB | Audi A6 |
Length (mm) | 5175 | 5092 | 4939 |
Width (mm) | 1900 | 1880 | 2110 |
Height (mm) | 1520 | 1493 | 1470 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 3105 | 3094 | 2930 |
Wheel size | 18/19-inch | 18/20-inch | 18/19-inch |
As one can clearly see, the 5 Series LWB is by far the longest, widest, tallest and overall the largest sedan in this space, followed by the E-Class LWB. The Audi A6 is the smallest since it doesn’t come as a LWB. The A6 also gets the smallest wheelbase of 2930mm and as a result, it would ideally lack in the interiors legroom and knee room, especially for rear seat passengers.

Another common factor among the three are the standard 18-inch alloy wheels with the option of 19-inch units in Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series LWB. The Merc, on the other hand, also gets an 18-inch alloy wheel as standard with the option 20-inch units. So clearly, the Audi loses out as far as size is concerned and also the new 5 Series and E-Class have grown in size significantly.
