6th-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB production begins– launch on Oct 9

The E-Class was the first model from Mercedes-Benz to be locally produced in India back, when the W124 launched in 1995.

The sixth-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class broke covers in India last month. To be exclusively available in the long wheelbase (LWB) form in India, the latest E-Class made its global debut in September last year. Moreover, India will be the first right-hand driven market to receive the sixth-gen E-Class LWB.

The German marque has now announced the commencement of production of the luxury saloon at its Chakan plant near Pune. The new E-Class is slated to go on sale in the country from 9 October 2024. Internally codenamed V214, deliveries of the sixth-gen E-Class are expected to commence by Diwali this year.

The company has announced that the new E-Class LWB has received its type approval certificate from ARAI and has been tested at multiple locations in India like Pune, Chennai and Indore and also in Germany and Spain. The upcoming E-Class LWB gets several updates over its predecessor.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Design, features, & specs

For starters, the new-gen E-Class LWB is now 13mm taller, and 14mm longer than its predecessor, with a 15mm increase in wheelbase as well, taking it even closer to the S-Class. It measures 5092 mm long, 1800 mm wide, and 1493 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 3094 mm. The saloon gets a heavily redesigned front fascia and reprofiled LED headlamps. 

Inside the cabin, the new E-Class gets a relaid dashboard housing a 14.4-inch central infotainment system and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a dedicated 12.3-inch infotainment display for the front passenger. Other feature highlights include a Burmester 4D surround sound system, a selfie camera for photos and videos, a panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control, and wireless phone chargers for both front and rear passengers.

Mercedes will be offering two engine options with the new E-Class: a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel. The former kicks out 201 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque while the latter 194 bhp and 440 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox as standard. The E-Class now benefits from a 48V mild hybrid system providing an additional boost of 23 bhp and 205 Nm for 30 seconds.
