Toyota has taken the covers off the updated Land Cruiser LC250 also known as the Prado globally. For 2026, Toyota has made a small but crucial update to the Prado. Visually, the SUV remains unchanged but underneath the hoot, the Land Cruiser Prado now gets a mild-hybrid powertrain.
The latest iteration of the Prado now gets a 2.8-litre diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This 7.6kg mild-hybrid setup comprises an electric motor-generator instead of a conventional alternator, a DC-DC power converter, and a 48V 4.3Ah lithium-ion battery. Moreover, transmission duties on this diesel mild-hybrid engine is now carried out by an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
This mild-hybrid setup made its global debut in the Hilux last year and was later carried over to the Fortuner and Legender which was launched in India earlier last month. The updated powertrain continues to deliver the same 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque as before, but Toyota claims the powertrain is now more refined and responsive.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Mild-hybrid: Working & Benefits
The 48V hybrid system enhances the stop-start function, delivering quicker, smoother, and quieter engine restarts with minimal vibration — making city driving more comfortable and less fatiguing. Since the motor-generator remains engaged, engine restarts occur almost instantly after a stop, even at higher engine speeds.
In heavy traffic or when the driver slightly eases pressure on the brake pedal, the system can automatically restart the engine. When the system’s battery is fully charged, it can provide up to 12 kW (16 bhp) of additional power and 65 Nm of torque to assist the powertrain during initial acceleration.
With the motor-generator constantly engaged, engine restarts after shutdown are quick and seamless. Additionally, the system offers customizable stop durations through the vehicle’s driver display, allowing drivers to select between “Normal” and “Long” settings. The motor-generator is positioned high on the engine, enabling the vehicle to safely wade through water up to 700 mm deep at low speeds.
