You do tend to get the feeling that the folks at Mercedes Benz find it extremely hard to let go of their G-Wagen tank.. Erm.. SUV. While this might be all fun and games for the folks at Daimler, its makes us motor noters look like booboo the fool all up in last year like, this is going to be the last ever G-Wagen and what have you. Turns out when the good folks at Mercedes were saying this they were talking about the fact that the last G-Wagen had gone through the better half of 50 years without an actual update, literally this current edition shape-wise was launched in the 1970s. Over the next few decade Mercedes Benz gave it more cosmetic touches than Michael Jackson’s nose to keep it current. The powertrains have changed, the interiors have been wrapped in an assortment of   various animal hides and exotics fabrics but this 2018 will be the first actual generation change for the G-Wagen.
Now don’t expect the G to get a GLE kind of update, I think it would lose its entire relevance if they changed the shape entirely, so they have given the exterior a bit of a nip and a tuck and kept it mostly the same. However the big change is on the interior, according to images released by Mercedes-Benz globally. It gets that giant half-dash screen and the new generation vents.
The seats seem to be updated as well, but what I can’t get over is the really round steering wheel, an oddity in any Mercedes, but a neat trick to make this brushed aluminium ala leather fuselage still seem retro. By the looks of it the real OG is still a dangerous off-roader with those signature triple locking diffs still in place. In the meanwhile the new G-Wagen was spotted in full camo by Caranddriver a while back, but we are yet to hear anything official as yet.
