Schools and colleges are about to close down for summer vacations and families would already have decided on their favourite destinations to visit this season. Many of these tourists prefer to use their own vehicles as a means to their travel.
While we always talk about vehicles and how to take care of them, it is equally important to know how to take care of ourselves. In consultation with Dr. Nimissha Jain, Diet Counsellor, Madhuban Diet Clinic, New Delhi, we have compiled a list of healthy snacks one can pack for a long road trip so that they shouldn’t have to stop midway to replenish on something unhealthy.
Healthy snack for road trips
1. Fresh Fruit: Pack fruits like apples, bananas, grapes, or berries. They’re portable, refreshing, and loaded with vitamins and fibre.
2. Trail Mix: You can create your own trail mix with a variety of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Almonds, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and dried cranberries or apricots are a satisfying blend.
3. Vegetable Sticks with Hummus: Pack pre-cut carrots, celery, cucumber, and bell pepper sticks along with small containers of hummus that can be used for dipping. It’s a crunchy, satisfying snack with a dose of protein and fiber.
4. Whole Grain Crackers with Cheese: Choose whole grain or seed crackers and eat them with single-serving portions of cheese. Go for options like cheddar cheese sticks or pre-cut cheese slices for convenience.
5. Greek Yogurt: Opt for individual containers of Greek yogurt, which are rich in protein and probiotics. You can also add some honey or fruit for extra flavour.
6. Popcorn: Air-popped popcorn or lightly seasoned popcorn is a filling and low-calorie snack that’s perfect for munching on during a road trip.
7. Energy Bars: Go for bars that have minimal added sugars and ingredients you can pronounce. Choose options that are high in protein and fibre to keep you feeling satisfied.
8. Hard-Boiled Eggs: Hard-boiled eggs are a portable source of protein that can keep you feeling full between meals. You can pack them in a cooler with an ice pack to keep them fresh and prevent them from rotting.
9. Roasted Peanuts: Roasted peanuts are a great snacking option as they are rich in protein and are perfect for munching on during the road trip.
10. Dried Seaweed Snacks: Packs of dried seaweed snacks are another great option for snacking. They’re low in calories and provide vitamins and minerals like iodine.
