It seems the Indian riding community has found a liking towards sporty, Maxi-style scooters. The Yamaha Aerox 155 and Aprilia SXR 160 are the two lone warriors in this segment but both vehicles are testament to the fact that scooters can be fun and not just convenient.
This will be followed by the Hero Xoom 160 which was launched earlier this year at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, although deliveries of the same are yet to commence. Now, there are reports that TVS might join the 150-160cc segment of sporty Maxi-style scooters soon.
TVS Ntorq 150: What to expect?
According to Autocar India, TVS is readying a more powerful 150cc version of Ntorq which is slated to hit showrooms around the festive season this year. There have been reports of TVS developing a 150cc Maxi-style scooter since 2018 but no concrete update has come our way till now. In fact, back at Auto Expo 2016, TVS showcased a concept called Entorq 210 which didn’t take a final shape but could inspire the upcoming scooter, at least visually.
As of now, TVS has no liquid-cooled engine below the 300cc displacement. Therefore, it is most likely that TVS will build a new engine from the ground up. The other option is TVS tweaking the displacement of the existing 159.7cc unit (2-valve and 4-valve) currently used in the entry-level Apache range of motorcycles.
This will be a more cost-effective measure although it might not produce an output like the Aerox or Xoom 160 which are powered by liquid-cooled units. Also, cost will be a big factor for TVS and a simple air/oil-cooled setup will help keep the price of the scooter competitive as compared to the Aerox and Xoom 160.
For the moment, details about this project are very scarce. Hence, making an accurate presumption will be very difficult. TVS is yet to divulge any official remarks on this. Hopefully, there will be some updates coming our way soon.
