Triumph will launch its third motorcycle in the 400cc lineup tomorrow (if we discount Speed T4 and Scrambler 400 XC as additional variants of Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, respectively). Called Thruxton 400, the motorcycle will be the smallest cafe racer in the Thruxton lineup and will share a lot of commonalities with its other two 400cc siblings.
Test mules of the Thruxton 400 have been spotted on numerous occasions in recent months both in India as well as abroad. Ahead of its launch, units of the neo-retro cafe racer have started reaching showrooms. The latest spy images show a production unit of the Thruxton 400 wearing a dual-tone colour of yellow and silver. As Triumph gears for the launch of the baby Thruxton, let us look at what to expect from it.
Triumph Thruxton 400: Expected Design
As seen in all the spy images till date, the Thruxton 400 derives its styling majorly from the flagship Thruxton 1200, especially the front end with a fighterjet-inspired faired body adding visual mass to its design. The round headlamp is nestled within the elaborate front apron. Like a typical cafe racer, the clip-on handlebar is set very low and foot pegs positioned slightly rear, in order to lend a very sporty and committed riding posture.Â

Rest of the visual elements such as the teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a single-piece seat with ribbed pattern, an upswept exhaust, taillamp assembly, and a single-piece pillion grab rail have been borrowed from the Speed 400.
Triumph Thruxton 400: Expected Specs
Powering the Thruxton 400 is the same 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine which propels Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. This engine produces 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 37.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Power will be transferred to a 6-speed gearbox via a slip and assist clutch. The motor is expected to undergo tuning adjustments by Triumph and Bajaj to optimize its performance for the Thruxton’s character.
Building on the Speed 400 platform, the upcoming Thruxton 400 is expected to carry forward the same underpinnings. These include a black inverted front fork, rear monoshock, and single disc brakes at both ends, supported by dual-channel ABS for added safety. The international test mule was seen riding on 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Pirelli Rosso tyres. However, the India-spec model is likely to come equipped with more cost-effective, locally sourced tyres from brands such as MRF or Apollo.
Triumph Thruxton 400: Expected Price
Triumph currently retails the Speed 400 at Rs 2.40 lakh and the Scrambler 400X at Rs 2.65 lakh (both ex-showroom). The forthcoming Thruxton 400 is likely to sit at the top of the 400cc lineup and is expected to carry a premium price of around Rs 2.80 lakh (ex-showroom).
