This also means riders need to start taking measures for protecting their bikes from the torrential rain which is about to lash the majority of the country. Here are five tips that will be extremely useful to every bike owner this monsoon.
Parking
The most important step in maintaining a two-wheeler during the monsoon is to protect it from rain. Always park it under a shelter or use a waterproof cover. Leaving a motorcycle or scooter exposed to rain for extended periods—especially overnight—can cause serious damage to electrical components, cables, seat covers, and more. Additionally, water may seep into the fuel tank or, in older models, the carburettor, making it difficult or impossible to start the vehicle.
Check Tyres
Ensuring your tyres have proper tread and are correctly inflated is essential for safe riding in rainy conditions. Regularly inspect the tread depth to make sure it meets the minimum recommended level. Additionally, keep the tyre pressure at the level specified in your bike’s manual. Proper inflation improves traction and stability on wet roads.
Inspect brakes, chain, electrical components
Rain can strip away the lubricants that keep your bike’s moving parts operating smoothly. During the monsoon, it’s important to regularly lubricate the chain, throttle cables, and other essential components. Opt for a waterproof chain lube to provide long-lasting protection against moisture.
Check your brake pads regularly to ensure they’re in good condition. If they show signs of wear, replace them without delay. Also, inspect for any brake fluid leaks, as these can significantly reduce braking efficiency and safety.
Make sure all your bike’s lights—headlights, taillights, and turn signals—are working properly. Also, check the wiring and connectors for any signs of corrosion or damage, as moisture can seep into electrical components and cause malfunctions. Don’t forget to inspect the air filter as well. Clean or replace it if necessary to prevent dirt and water from entering the engine, as a clogged or soaked air filter can hinder performance.
Battery Protection
Rainwater can negatively impact your bike’s battery. To safeguard it, make sure the battery is firmly secured and the terminals are clean and free of corrosion. If the bike won’t be used for an extended period, consider using a battery tender or disconnecting the battery to maintain its health.
Proper insurance coverage
In India, vehicle insurance is mandatory, but standard policies typically don’t include flood damage. To stay protected, you need to opt for flood coverage as an add-on. While this comes at an additional cost, it provides valuable protection against heavy rains and flooding—common occurrences in many regions across the country.
