The monsoon has arrived a bit early this year, and with the rains comes that inescapable humidity – a recipe for sweat and a less-than-fresh helmet experience. But let’s be real, even on a usual day, your helmet is basically a magnet for grime, dust, and all that hard-earned sweat. So, how do you keep it clean and fresh? Here are a few tips to help you out
For shell & vents:
For the helmet exterior, you need to gently clean it with high-quality microfibre cloth. If you could, dedicate a few cloths just for cleaning helmets. Then, take some warm water in a vessel and add a tiny drop of mild dish soap or baby shampoo. Now you can use the prepared soap solution for cleaning stubborn dirt, but ensure to rinse thoroughly. If your pocket allows, there are a lot of brands that sell helmet and visor cleaning products. You can buy these products on Amazon, Flipkart, and from their websites as well. Muc-off, Motul, S100, 3M, TVS and many other brands sell their helmet and visor cleaning solutions.Â
For the Helmet Interior (Liner & Padding):
Maintaining the interior of your helmet is crucial for both hygiene and comfort, especially when battling with sweat and humidity. For those with removable helmet liners, you often have the convenient option of washing helmet liner components either by hand using a gentle baby shampoo or a dedicated helmet interior cleaner. If the helmet manual permits, you can wash the helmet liner on a gentle washing machine cycle with mild laundry detergent. If your helmet features non-removable padding, worry not, we’ve got your back. There are specialised helmet interior cleaners and helmet deodoriser sprays, which could be your best friends. Before moving on, don’t forget an alcohol-free antibacterial spray for an extra layer of helmet hygiene between deep cleans. After washing and spraying them, it’s time for sunbathing. Dry your helmets properly to prevent smell or mildew.Â
For the Visor & Pinlock Insert:
To ensure crystal-clear visibility, proper helmet visor cleaning is the most important part of helmet maintenance. As in the first point, we mentioned that there are helmet and visor cleaners available in the market. Try going for the visor-specific cleaners, or dual-purpose cleaners like those of Muc-off. Never use an ammonia-based glass cleaner as they can damage the specialised coatings of your visor. As we mentioned before, always use a dedicated, clean microfiber cloth for the helmet visor to prevent scratches. If you can, consider anti-fog solutions like Pinlock inserts or reliable anti-fog sprays for helmet visors, such as Fog City.
Apart from that, when the helmet is not in use, keep it in a helmet bag or case to protect it from dust and scratches.
