The 400cc segment is now the most popular in India, with multiple motorcycles to cater to various needs. The most recent launches in the segment are the updated Triumph Speed 400 and the new Speed T4, which share a lot of similarities and differences as well.
The new Triumph Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2.40 lakh, ex-showroom, while the all-new Speed T4 carries a price tag of Rs 2.17 lakh, ex-showroom. The difference in price is Rs 23,000 and for that money, the Speed 400 seems to offer so much more. So which of the two should you buy, new Triumph Speed T4 or the updated Speed 400?

There are several factors to consider, and the primary one is whether you are an experienced rider or if you’re just getting your first motorcycle. If this is the first motorcycle, the 400cc segment should not be on your list at all, and a sub 300cc machine would be ideal, while we would point to a sub 200cc motorcycle.
However, if you’re adamant, the Triumph Speed T4 should be your pick. Although it gets telescopic forks and a detuned engine that makes 30bhp, this is plenty for a new rider. The torque available at lower revs and its relaxed nature (as claimed by the company), would be ideal for a rider to learn and use the motorcycle in various conditions. Mind you, 30bhp is still plenty to tour on as well.
If you are an experienced rider and looking for a smaller displacement motorcycle for daily commutes or a person stepping up as an upgrade, the Speed 400 is what you must be looking at. For Rs 23,000 more, the Speed 400 gets USD forks, 10 more horsepower, and traction control. For someone stepping up, the Speed 400 is a lot of motorcycle and for someone looking for a second motorcycle in the garage as a daily alternative, the Triumph Speed 400 will surprise you.
