The wait is finally over and Royal Enfield has announced the pricing of the Himalayan. The new Royal Enfield Himalayan’s introductory price starts at Rs 2.69 lakh, ex-showroom and is available in five colours. The new Himalayan is almost Rs 1 lakh cheaper than its closest competition in India, the KTM 390 Adventure SW, which is priced at Rs 3.60 lakh, ex-showroom.

The Himalayan is a new motorcycle built ground-up, featuring a new chassis, suspension components, a longer wheelbase, and an all-new 450cc liquid-cooled engine mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The new Himalayan has retained the original DNA, with mounts to strap luggage around the tank, and that calm go anywhere attitude. These were what made the older 411 a success.

As mentioned before, the Himalayan gets USD forks, a monoshock at the rear, a TFT dash, disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS, phone connectivity, 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, and spoked wheels. The international-spec Himalayan gets tubeless spoked wheels, however, for India, it will be available at a later stage.
Now, one of the biggest success factors for the new Himalayan will be the pricing. Knowing the company and its past, especially with the pricing of the 650 twins, if Royal Enfield can price the new Himalayan under Rs 3 lakh, the company has a winner.
The Himalayan has been in development for years and this is what the product should have been from day 1. However, better late than never. The new Himalayan has been tested extensively on different terrains in the Himalayas, where it draws its name from.
The new Himalayan’s only competitor is the KTM 390 Adventure SW, the model with spoke wheels and adjustable suspension. The KTM also uses a single-cylinder engine, but makes more power. However, the Royal Enfield Himalayan is a more capable off-roader owing to its long travel suspension.
The new Himalayan features a round TFT instrument console, a world-first. The round dash displays all the essentials, along with music, phone connectivity, and navigation in association with Google Maps. The navigation is mirrored from the phone and does a good job.
Royal Enfield has tuned the engine to deliver 90 percent of its peak torque at 3,000rpm, making most of the power available at the bottom end. That said, the gearbox gets no quickshifter, instead, it gets a slip and assist clutch to make the shifts more slick.
The most-talked-about feature with the new Himalayan is the engine and the motorcycle uses a 450cc, liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that makes 40bhp and 40Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
The new Royal Enfield Himalayan gets USD front forks made by Showa and a monoshock at the rear. The front offers no adjustability, however, they have 200mm of travel, helping the motorcycle overcome most obstacles.
