Kawasaki has two compelling options for entry-level off-roaders, the KLX 230 and the KLX 230R S. Both motorcycles have had a massive drop in price as Kawasaki decided to build them in India instead of them being sold as CKD kits.
This has opened the doors to many enthusiasts and recreational off-road enthusiasts to more choices in the segment, which was previously dominated by the Hero XPulse 200 and, later, the 210. With two offerings from Kawasaki in almost the same price point, which one should you choose?
Kawasaki KLX 230 vs KLX 230R S: What are the similarities and differences?
Let’s start with similarities. The Kawasaki KLX 230 and KLX 230R S are based on the same frame, a high-tensile steel unit, and share the dimensions and front and rear wheel travel. The two motorcycles share a lot of components as well, including wheel size – 21 front and 18 rear – brakes, and even the engine.
Speaking of the engine, the Kawasaki KLX 230 and the KLX 230R S use a 233cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine. The engine makes 19.57bhp and 20.6Nm of torque with the help of a six-speed gearbox. There is no quickshifter on offer, but the motorcycles do get switchable ABS, which helps when off-roading.
Now, the differences. The Kawasaki KLX 230 features a headlight, tail lamp, turn indicators, and a horn. All of these make the motorcycle road-legal, meaning it can be registered.
Also, the downside to this is that it makes the motorcycle heavier than the KLX 230R S. The difference is 136kg (KLX 230) vs 129kg (KLX 230R S). This difference in weight makes a huge difference when going off-road or when you’re on a trail.
Kawasaki KLX 230 or KLX 230R S: What will suit you?
If you are a recreational off-road enthusiast, or the motorcycle you’re looking for is not the primary one, and you don’t intend on using it for anything other than off-roading, the KLX 230R S makes sense. The motorcycle is light, and this is a massive advantage off-road and to pick up the right skill. Please note that the KLX 230R S is not road legal.
If you want a motorcycle that has good off-road capabilities, and can do the roads, and will be an active part of your everyday commute, the Kawasaki KLX 230 is the way.
