Motorcycle makers globally are slowly transitioning towards automatic gearboxes for motorcycles, and brands such as BMW, Yamaha, Honda, and KTM have already made progress. The latest to join the league is Ducati, which is working on an automatic gearbox which will make its debut with its high-performance motorcycles.
Ducati automatic gearbox — More details
As per leaked documents, the Italian motorcycle maker is working on a gearbox that works either fully automatic or semi-automatic, depending on what the rider prefers. It works similarly to the Honda e-clutch system, allowing the rider to take control at any time, however, unlike the Honda’s cable-operated method, Ducati is exploring a hydraulic system.
The automatic gearbox assembly consists of a computer-control unit, electromechanical actuator, a spinning threaded rod and a ball screw assembly. These components can be integrated into existing Ducati motorcycles as well.
Ducati is using the same components to develop two types of gearboxes — one that eliminates the clutch action completely, while the other allows the rider to use the clutch if necessary. What is also interesting is the fact that the automatic clutch system allows launch control on the motorcycles. This means that Ducati’s race machines in WSBK can make use of the clutch.
