BMW Motorrad is preparing to launch a new adventure motorcycle — the R12 GS. Slated to make its global debut on 27 March 2025, the R12 GS has been under development since the last few years and spotted testing for the first time exactly a year ago.

The new R12 GS will be based on the same platform as the BMW R 12 nineT which made its debut in 2023. Unlike the GS 1300 which was a traditional adventure tourer, the R12 GS is likely to be more of an endurance bike with the focus to tackle tricky off-road challenges.

BMW R12 GS teased: What to expect?

Ahead of its global debut later this week, the motorcycle division of the German marque has teased the upcoming enduro bike on its social media handles. The teaser reveals only a faint glimpse of the motorcycle with the “R12 GS” branding on the side panel. Previous spy shots have revealed a more intimidating stance as compared to the road-biased R 12 nineT thanks to a larger front wheel and a taller handlebar.

Although the main frame will be the same as the R 12 nineT, rest of the underpinnings in the R12 GS will be completely different. For instance, the enduro bike will roll on 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoke wheels wrapped in knobby tyres. Previous spy images have revealed that the bike will get a single-sided upswept exhaust muffler.

The overall look of the bike is expected to remain barebones and minimalist. Other visual details we expect to see in the upcoming R12 GS are a front beak, a round headlamp nestled within a cowl, a floating tail section, and a chiselled fuel tank. The upside down front forks and rear monoshock will be carried forward from the R12 nineT but there will be a lot more travel on offer at both ends.

As far as engine is concerned, the BMW R12 GS will be powered by a 1,170cc, air/oil-cooled, boxer twin engine which is good enough to push out 109 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be paired by a six-speed gearbox via a slip and assist clutch.
