Classic Legends has had a busy last few weeks with multiple launches including the updated Yezdi Adventure, Roadster, Jawa 42, and the all-new BSA Gold Star. The Jawa 42 has received a significant upgrade over the outgoing model. The 42 is a sporty neo-retro motorcycle which goes up against the likes of Royal Enfield Hunter 350.

Both motorcycles are fairly compact and satisfy the needs of a sporty urban commuter. The figures justify the same as both bikes get almost an identical wheelbase and seat height. However, when it comes to length, width, height, and ground clearance, Jawa 42 has larger dimensions when compared to the Hunter. The Jawa is also significantly heavier than the Hunter at 184 kg as compared to the latter’s 177 kg (both kerb). Jawa 42 also gets a slightly larger fuel tank of 13.2 litres.

The new Jawa 42 gains a fully-digital LCD instrument panel, however there are still no signs of a USB charging port. The Hunter gets a semi-digital console with an analog speed dial and a USB charging port. Otherwise equipment offered on both bikes are basic which includes a halogen headlamp.

Both Jawa 42 and Royal Enfield Hunter 350 are based on a dual-cradle frame which sit on telescopic forks up front and twin rear shock absorbers. However, Hunter gets slightly thicker 41mm front forks as compared to 35mm forks in Jawa 42. Hunter 350 gets larger front and rear disc brakes at 300mm and 270mm, respectively, whereas Jawa 42 gets 280mm and 240mm front and rear disc brakes.

While Hunter rolls 17-inch wheels at both ends, Jawa 42 gets an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear. This should ideally make the Hunter a slightly better handler on roads. Both motorcycles offer wire-spoke wheels in the base trims and alloy-wheels in the mid-spec and higher-end trims.

The 2024 Jawa 42 gets a heavily upgraded 294.72cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder Panther engine which is available with a 6-speed gearbox. This motor churns out a higher output than the 349cc single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine offered with the Hunter 350 which is paired with a 5-speed gearbox. That said, Jawa 42 gets a slip and assist clutch which should ideally translate to quicker and smoother gear shifts.
