NHPC said on Monday it has commissioned its 120-mw Sewa-II hydroelectric project in Jammu &Kashmir, taking its installed capacity to 5,295 mw. The plant will generate 534 million units of energy in a 90% dependable year.
States like Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Union Territory of Chandigarh will draw power from the plant. The 510-mw Teesta-V project in Sikkim and 520-mw Omkareshwar project of NHDC, a JV between NHPC Madhya Pradesh, are the two projects commissioned by the central utility against its capacity addition target for the current plan. Situated between the villages of Gatti and Mashka in Basoli tehsil of Kathua district of J&K, the Sewa-II project is a run-of-the river scheme constructed on the Sewa river, a tributary of Ravi. The project has been executed in the face of challenges like geological problems.
NHPC is also in the process of forming a joint venture with the state utility and PTC India for developing 2,100-mw capacity in the Chenab river basin, including the 1,000-mw Pakal Dul.
