Human cost continues to grow

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, more than 3,500 people have been killed and over one million have been displaced since the fighting began in early March.

The violence has also affected international peacekeepers. A Serbian member of the UN peacekeeping mission was killed after a mortar shell struck a UN position in southern Lebanon. Two other peacekeepers were injured. The United Nations has launched an investigation into the attack.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

“All attacks on peacekeepers must be promptly investigated, and those responsible must be effectively prosecuted and held accountable,” he said.

Lebanon urges all sides to seize the opportunity

Before Hezbollah publicly rejected the deal, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun had described it as the country’s “final opportunity” to secure a comprehensive ceasefire.

He said Beirut was still waiting for Hezbollah’s response before formally notifying Washington that all sides had agreed. According to Aoun, the truce could begin within 24 hours once that process was completed.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also warned that anyone delaying or rejecting the agreement would bear responsibility for the consequences.

“Every hour that passes without implementation is an hour paid for by the south and its people,” he said

Hezbollah says the deal is unacceptable

The biggest blow to the ceasefire came from Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem, who rejected the agreement outright.

Calling the ceasefire “illusory”, Qassem said it amounted to “surrender, defeat and the realization of the enemy’s objectives”. He argued that the deal would force Hezbollah to stop fighting and withdraw from southern Lebanon while Israeli troops remained in control of the area.

Qassem insisted that any ceasefire must include a complete end to Israel’s military campaign and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.

“As long as the occupation continues, the resistance will continue,” he said.

Hezbollah also made clear that it had not promised to stop responding to Israeli attacks. The group later said it had carried out rocket and drone strikes against Israeli troops near the border.

Ceasefire announced, but fighting continues

Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fresh attacks on Thursday, throwing a newly announced US-brokered ceasefire into doubt almost as soon as it was unveiled. IAEA says Iran’s enriched uranium remains unaccounted for amid inspection gap

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its latest assessment of Iran’s nuclear programme shows little change despite three months of U.S.-Israeli military action aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. The watchdog reiterated calls for Iran to explain the fate of its enriched uranium stockpiles, which it says have remained unaccounted for since earlier strikes on key nuclear facilities. The agency warned that its inability to verify previously declared low- and highly enriched uranium for nearly a year is a matter of proliferation concern. “The Agency’s loss of continuity of knowledge over all previously declared nuclear material at affected facilities in Iran needs to be addressed with the utmost urgency,” the report said.

IAEA says estimates of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile remain unchanged

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its estimates of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles as of June 13, 2025, remain unchanged from previous reports. The agency’s assessment is based on information provided by Iran, verification activities conducted before the June 13 attacks, and estimates derived from the past operation of nuclear facilities. The finding comes as IAEA inspectors continue to face restrictions on access to key Iranian nuclear sites. The agency has said it cannot independently verify changes to Iran’s stockpile since June 13 due to the lack of in-field inspections.
