Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Canada by evening to attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis. This marks his first visit to Canada in a decade.

As the G7 summit kicks off today in the scenic setting of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, world leaders appear united by one unspoken goal: keep the sparks from flying.

With global tensions running high, from the grinding wars in Ukraine and Gaza to a dangerously escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, leaders of the world’s major democracies are walking a geopolitical tightrope. The looming presence of Donald Trump, though not at the summit, adds another layer of unease. His recent return to frontline politics and turbulent legacy at past G7 meetings cast a long shadow.

Trump’s last G7 appearance in 2018 was anything but quiet. He urged fellow democracies to welcome Russia back into the fold, slammed allies and abruptly exited after slapping tariffs on Canadian metals, leaving the summit in disarray.

Now, with Trump once again on the horizon, the G7 is bracing itself.

On the first leg of his three-nation visit, PM Modi reached Cyprus on June 15. From here, he will head next to Canada to participate in G7 Summit. During a joint address with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides today, PM Modi said India hopes to finalise a comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Union by the end of this year. Speaking during his official visit to Cyprus, Modi said there is vast potential in strengthening economic ties with the Mediterranean nation, which is set to hold the EU presidency in 2026.

“We are working on concluding a mutually beneficial India-EU trade agreement by year-end,” PM Modi said.

Cyprus, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with India and said that enhancing bilateral and EU-level relations with Delhi would be a key priority during its upcoming presidency.

During his meeting with leaders in Cyprus, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the host nation’s continued support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism. “We are grateful for Cyprus’ support. A mechanism for real-time information exchange between our agencies will be developed to counter terrorism, drug trafficking and arms smuggling,” Modi said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to land in Canada on Monday to attend the G7 Summit. It will mark his first visit to the country in a decade.

“At the summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi.

He will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines.

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung and his wife, First Lady Kim Hye Gyeong were pictured preparing to board their plane at Seoul Air Base on Monday before leaving for the G7 Summit in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to sit down with US President Donald Trump for an early chat on Monday morning (local time). The PM’s Office said that the global leaders will cross paths before the G7 Summit’s main talks officially kick off.

Trade and security are high on agenda for Carney as he also seeks to get rid of punitive tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium and the auto industry.

As global leaders land in Calgary for the G7 Summit, Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain lodge’s general manager Elizabeth Hovey-Smith said that lodge aims to introduce the guest to Kananaskis.

“Tying in local food and drinks, and highlighting local suppliers and working with local artists . . . introduce the group to a truly Albertan experience in the Rockies,” she said, as per local Canadian media outlet Calgary Herald.

While little is known about what will be served to the global guests, a spokesperson for the lodge said that the cuisine will focus on regional and local ingredients, including Alberta beef, coast-to-coast seafood and local berries, foraged vegetables, regional cheeses, and nuts and seeds.

Meanwhile, a controlled access zone as been set up around the property by the Integrated Safety and Security Group. The multi-agency team includes the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Sheriffs, provincial conservation officers and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni crossed paths with the Friedrick Merz, Germany’s chancellor, at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis. In addition to discussing their desire to hold a new edition of the Intergovernmental Summit between the two countries in Rome in early 2026, they also exchanged their thoughts on development in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Contrary to visuals of Khalistani extremism coming from Canada ahead of Narendra Modi‘s arrival at the G7 Summit, Jasdip Singh Jesse, founder of Sikhs of America slammed these protests and claims to ‘ambush’ the event. Fighter jets in Canada intercepted a private civilian plane violating restricted airspace above Kananaskis, Alberta, where global leaders are gathering for the G7 Summit.

According to RCMP’s news release, the fixed-win Canadian aircraft’s violation was recorded shortly after 11 am on Sunday. As a result, the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) deployed CF-18 Hornet fighter jet to intercept it.

“After multiple steps were taken to gain the pilot’s attention, CANR employed final warning measures to contact the pilot and have them safely land under their own power,” said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

During the first leg of his three-nation tour, PM Narendra Modi was accorded with Cyprus’ highest honour at the presidential palace. After the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III was conferred on the Indian leader by President Nikos Christodoulides, Modi dedicated the award to the “friendship between our nations.”

French President Emmanuel Macron was among the early arrivals in Canada for the G7 Summit. A Canadian delegation welcomed him as he disembarked from the presidential plane at Calgary International Airport. Like Trump, he eventually got onboard a helicopter, heading off to the G7 venue in Kananaskis, Alberta.

On Sunday, Macron urged Trump to exert his influence in defusing warns in Ukraine and in the Middle East.

“From my point of view, it’s a question of knowing whether President Trump is ready to put forward much stronger sanctions against Russia,” the French president said during a news conference on Sunday.

Earlier today, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that he was on his way to the G7. “In an era of global instability, I will do everything in my power to deliver safety and security for working people in Britain,” he posted on X.

Upon his arrival, he shared a video of himself taking a “quick walk in the mountains” before the G7 Summit meetings. The official page for the UK PM’s office similarly shared the snaps of his walk through nature.

“Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer is here at the G7 to deliver for Britain,” they wrote, tagging the location as Rocky Mountains, Canada.

Ahead of his G7 arrival in Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India was poised to become the third-largest economy in the world. His major admission came during his Cyprus visit, the first leg of the his three-nation tour.

During a roundtable on Sunday in Limassol, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus, Modi foregrounded India’s economic growth in the last 11 years. “India’s focus on innovation, digital revolution, start-up culture and future-ready infrastructure is positioning it firmly on the path to becoming the world’s third-largest economy,” he said.

After wrapping up his commitments in Cyprus, PM Modi will jet off to Canada, following up on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invite to the G7 Summit.

According to Japanese media reports, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump amid the yet-to-commence G7 Summit meetings in Canada. Tariffs are poised to be the prime focus of their discussion.

Having met Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz ahead of G7 Summit meetings, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared his reaction on social media.

“Great to meet with @Bundeskanzler ahead of tomorrow’s @G7 Summit meetings. Germany is a strong ally to Canada, and our nations have more opportunities for collaboration ahead — on energy security, emerging technologies, and defence. Together, we’ll seize them,” he wrote on X.

An International Media Centre has been set up in Banff, Alberta, ahead of the official G7 Summit commencement. According to IANS, the facility offers support including help desks, delegate schedule and arrival information for representative from Group of Seven countries.

Another such video emerging from Calgary amid the G7 fever showed law enforcement – decked out in full gear – blocking roads as pro-Palestinian protests raged in Canada.

A banner read: “G7: There’s blood on your hands.” Another said: “Stop the Genocide.” Masses took the streets with Palestinian flags in their hands.

According to videos circulating on X, Khalistani extremists appear to have already launched their plans of smearing efforts to elevate India-Canada ties. Long queues of vehicles branded with the word “Khalistan Zindabad” took to the streets to voice their disinterest in Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s arrival in Canada for the G7 Summit this week.

A man named Manjinder Singh led the convoy in Calgary, further urging Canadians to join them for the “ambush,” while vehemently speaking against the Indian leader.

Newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is all set to depart for the G7 Summit in Canada on Monday. This major gobal appearance marks his diplomatic debut at global stage less than two weeks after his office term kicked off earlier this month.

“Through the occasion, President Lee aims to build rapport with global leaders and lay the groundwork for achieving tangible results on key issues, including trade,” presidential spokesperson Kang Yu Jung said, as per a Korean media report.

“It is expected to elevate South Korea’s stature on the global stage by showcasing the greatness of Koreans who have overcome martial law and insurrection, as well as the strength of K-democracy.”

Meanwhile, the National Security Advisor said Sunday, “It will serve as a good opportunity for (the president) to take the first step toward pragmatic diplomacy centered on national interests. It will be very timely for him to have a chance to build trust early on through face-to-face meetings with the leaders of major countries, just 10 days after taking office.”

Ahead of the G7 Summit this week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sat down for a chat with Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa.

“As G7 and G20 presidents, Canada and South Africa are leading in the face of similar challenges and opportunities. With the rules-based system under threat, international cooperation is more important than ever,” he shared on X.

A member of the Indian diaspora in Calgary, Canada, opened up about how proud she felt in knowing that Narendra Modi was invited to the G7 Summit. She credited the Indian prime minister for building bridges with Canada despite prior strained relations during former PM Justin Trudeau’s government, as per IANS.

Another such Indian-origin individual shared her excitement over the matter. “It feels like one of our own is coming to our land,” she praised the moment of joy and celebration as a positive sign for India-Canada ties.

About an hour ago, US President Donald Trump, aboard the Air Force One, safely landed in Calgary for the G7 Summit. The Republican leader was seen descending the plane while flaunting his usual fist-pumping fervour. He was greeted by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Dominic LeBlanc, center, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, among other officials, at the Calgary International Airport.

Shortly after that, he boarded a chopper and headed off to the G7 Summit in Alberta.

The PM’s Office of Japan announced the arrival of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Kananaskis, located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Canada, via a social media update.

“Starting tomorrow, I will be attending the G7 Summit for two days. As the international community faces various challenges, the unity of the G7 is more important than ever. As the G7 marks its 50th anniversary, we, the leaders, will engage in candid discussions on the role it should play, and I will proactively communicate Japan’s positions and initiatives. ” they said on behalf of the prime minister.

With the G7 Summit underway in Calgary, Alberta, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared a heartwarming tweet on X. Celebrating his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, he wrote, “Shared values. Long term allies. True friends.”

“Australia and Canada know we’re stronger when we work together. That’s how we create opportunity and support security in the world.

It’s what leaders will be working on at the G7 meeting over coming days.

Given the warm ties between Canada and Ukraine, a large electronic billboard welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was spotted near the Calgary International Airport.

It reads: “The Ukrainian Canadian Community Proudly Welcomes President Zelenskyy to Canada and the G7 Summit.”

The billboard in question extending a warm welcome to the G7 guest has been designed by Ivan Ostapenko.

A US official familiar with the matter disclosed that US President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli plan to kill Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to AP.

Trump, on his part, issued a warning to Iran ahead of his departure to Canada for the G7 summit. In an early morning post, he said the US ” had nothing to do with the attack on Iran” as Israel and Iran continued their attacks for the third day.

“If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” Trump said.

He subsequently also predicted on social media about a potential deal between Israel and Iran coming soon.

“I hope there is going to be a deal, and we’ll see what happens, but sometimes they have to fight it out,” he eventually told reporters while leaving the White House on Sunday evening.
