President Donald Trump has departed Malaysia, the first stop on his three-country Asia tour. Trump bid farewell to Malaysian officials as supporters waved American and Malaysian flags on the tarmac.

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social before leaving Malaysia to share major diplomatic and economic wins during his visit. “Just leaving Malaysia, a great and very vibrant Country,” Trump wrote.
“Signed major Trade and Rare Earth Deals, and yesterday, most importantly, signed the Peace Treaty between Thailand and Cambodia.” He added, “NO WAR! Millions of lives saved. Such an honor to have gotten this done. Now, off to Japan!!!”

Just days ahead of a scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, China has announced that it has reached a “basic consensus” with the United States on a possible trade deal.

The “consensus” was reached after two days of talks between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and the US delegation led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur, Xinhua reported.

Following the talks, Bessent told CBS News that Trump’s threat of imposing an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods “has gone away.” The proposed tariffs were part of Trump’s response to Beijing’s expanded export controls on rare earth materials, which are essential for global industries like electronics and defence.

“We had a very good two-day meeting. I would believe that the – so it would be an extra 100% from where we are now, and I believe that that is effectively off the table. I would expect that the threat of the 100% has gone away, as has the threat of the immediate imposition of the Chinese initiating a worldwide export control regime,” Bessent said.

According to a Xinhua update, China and the United States have reached a “basic consensus” on how to handle their respective trade concerns after two days of talks in Kuala Lumpur. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng said on Sunday that the essence of China-US economic relations is “mutual benefit and win-win results,” adding that “both countries gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation.” The meeting was guided by the consensus reached earlier this year between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump during their phone conversations.

India and the leaders from ASEAN member states on Sunday adopted the “ASEAN-India Joint Leaders’ Statement on Sustainable Tourism”, reaffirming their commitment to promote eco-friendly, inclusive, and responsible tourism across the region, emphasising environmental sustainability and pollution reduction as key priorities under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two parties.

According to the statement, issued following the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the leaders agreed to adopt the “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” model, promote Travel for “LiFE actions”, and ensure sustainable, pro-planet practices in the tourism sector.

Top Chinese and US economic officials agreed on the framework for a trade agreement on Sunday as U.S. President Donald Trump said he was confident of hashing out a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping when they meet in the coming days.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and top trade negotiator Li Chenggang on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur for a fifth round of in-person discussions since May.

“I think we have a very successful framework for the leaders to discuss on Thursday,” Bessent told reporters.

Malaysia’s trade minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said on Sunday that the country has secured tariff exemptions for some of its exports to the United States, including palm oil, rubber, cacao, and aerospace equipment.

“The 21st century is our century, the century of India and ASEAN,” PM Modi said in his virtual address to the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, stressing the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and civilizational bonds.

He welcomed the addition of Timor Leste (also known as East Timor) into the group — its first expansion since the 1990s. Modi also noted the influential and significant role played by ASEAN member countries.

“Almost one-fourth of the world’s population is represented by us. We don’t just share geography but also culture and values. We are partners in the Global South. We are not just trade partners but also cultural partners. ASEAN is a main pillar of India’s Act East Policy. India supports ASEAN centrality and its outlook,” he said.

US, Thailand release joint statement outlining trade agreement

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations welcomed East Timor as its newest member Sunday — with its Prime Minister calling it a “dream realised” for the tiny nation. It was ASEAN’s first expansion since the 1990s and was more than a decade in the making.

“Today, history is made. For the people of Timor Leste, this is not only a dream realised, but a powerful affirmation of our journey — one marked by resilience, determination and hope,” Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao told the other leaders as the flag of East Timor, also known as Timor Leste, was added to the other 10 on the stage at a formal ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

The United States and Vietnam will finalise a trade agreement in the coming weeks that will maintain 20% tariffs on most Vietnamese goods but lift duties on certain products that will be decided at a later stage. In return Vietnam committed to offering “preferential access” for almost all US goods.

The two countries have agreed to a framework for the agreement on “reciprocal, fair and balanced” trade between the two nations, the countries said in a joint statement released by the White House. In the new deal, the United States will maintain its tariff rate on Vietnamese goods at 20%, but will identify products where the levy can be reduced to zero. The agreement “will provide both countries’ exporters unprecedented access to each other’s markets”.

President Donald Trump in July announced that the United States would place a 20% tariff on many Vietnamese products, as well as a 40% levy on trans-shipments through Vietnam from third countries.

The POTUS is angry with Canada because of a television advertisement protesting his trade policies. On his way to the summit, he announced on social media he would hike tariffs on Canada because of it.

Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held talks with Donald Trump on Sunday with officials indicating that it was a “happy” discussion. The Brazilian FM said Trump had given instructions to start a bilateral negotiation process (likely to happen today). Trump reportedly told Lula that he admired the political career of the Brazilian leader.

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said the conversations would target tariff suspension, and indicated that Brazil would ask for the steep levies to be suspended during the negotiation process.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he would solve the Afghanistan-Pakistan crisis “very quickly,” as peace talks between the warring neighbors entered a second day.

“I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up. But I’ll get that solved very quickly,” said Trump on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.

He made the comments while attending the signing of the Thailand–Cambodia peace agreement, adding that the leaders of Pakistan were “great people.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is attending the ASEAN Summit virtually, will address it in a few minutes from now – at around 3 pm.

The United States and Vietnam have announced a new framework aimed at establishing a reciprocal, fair and balanced trade agreement, according to the White House.

The deal is expected to give exporters from both countries unprecedented access to each other’s markets.

However, the US will continue to maintain a 20% tariff on Vietnam.

The joint statement further said that the two countries will identify products and potential tariff adjustments that could allow them to benefit from a zero per cent reciprocal tariff rate.

Both sides also agreed to work constructively to address non-tariff barriers and are aiming to finalise the agreement in the coming weeks, while ensuring that US agricultural products are not restricted in the Vietnamese market.

“I think we’re going to have a deal with China,” Trump told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

He added, “We’re going to meet them later in China and we’re going to meet them in the US, either Washington or Mar-a-Lago.”

Cambodian PM reiterated his nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving his country’s five-day conflict with Thailand in July.

Trump has assured Southeast Asian leaders that his country would be a strong partner for the region “for many generations”.

“Our message to the nations of Southeast Asia is that the United States is with you 100% and we intend to be a strong partner for many generations,” he said.

PM Modi has skipped this year’s ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in person and will attend it virtually.

President Trump reiterated his claim of brokering peace between nations, saying that he has stopped “eight wars in eight months”.

He added, “I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up, but I will solve it very quickly.”

Trump also praised Pakistan’s Field Marshal and PM Shehbaz Sharif, saying that they are “great people”.

US Treasury spokesperson has said that the trade talks between the United States and China have concluded in Malaysia.

Trump has signed a reciprocal trade pact with Cambodia and a critical minerals deal with Thailand after the two nations signed a peace treaty following deadly border clashes.

Thailand’s PM Anutin Charnvirakul and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet have signed a joint “peace deal” in the presence of US President Donald Trump.

The Cambodian PM has expressed deep gratitude to Trump for his decisive leadership, supporting lasting peace. He added, “No matter how difficult, complex a dispute may be, it must be resolved by peaceful means.”

The Thai PM also spoke, stating that with the deal starts a fresh chapter begins between the two nations.

“Today marks a new chapter for Thailand, Cambodia,” he said, before thanking Trump for his “personal dedication to peace between the two countries”.

He also assured that the country will “begin removing weapons and free POWs”.

“Today, alongside this peace treaty, we also are signing a major trade deal with Cambodia, and a very important critical minerals agreement with Thailand,” said Trump at the ceremony.

“This is so exciting, because we did something that a lot of people said couldn’t be done,” said President Trump in opening remarks at the ceremony.

He tagged it as a “monumental step”, adding, “Two great countries, but they were going at it. I want to congratulate the two courageous leaders … for taking this monumental step.”

Cambodia and Thailand are set to sign a peace agreement, which Trump is overseeing. He is in Malaysia to attend the ASEAN summit.
