A Mahindra XUV700 petrol automatic owner shared a concerning incident on Reddit after his car suddenly broke down in Delhi. The post was titled, “Filled petrol at Indian Oil, car broke down within hours”.

According to the user, the vehicle displayed a “Check Engine System” warning and refused to start soon after he had filled the fuel tank to full capacity at an Indian Oil petrol station near his office.

Fuel Contamination Discovered

The car had to be towed to a Mahindra workshop, where technicians drained the tank and presented a bottle of fuel mixed with water, reportedly taken directly from the car. The user wrote, “Got it towed to the workshop, the technician drained the tank and showed me a bottle sample of fuel mixed with water that came straight out of my car’s tank.”

The mechanics are now removing and cleaning the fuel tank before refilling it with fresh petrol. However, the workshop has cautioned that if the issue persists, the fuel pump or motor may also need replacement, which could lead to expensive repairs.

Questions Over Accountability

The Redditor pointed out that the issue arose immediately after refueling, despite filling at a reputed pump. He raised concerns about compensation, asking whether Indian Oil or the concerned petrol station can be held liable. He also questioned if consumer court action was possible if IOCL denies responsibility.

He further added, “Should I also check if my insurance covers fuel contamination?” The post has sparked discussions online, with others sharing similar experiences and offering suggestions about pursuing consumer rights and insurance claims.

One reddit user said, “Did you check with the owner of the petrol pump? I have read in other forums that the petrol pump owner should give the compensation.”

Another said, “I had the same thing happen with me, I filled up petrol from Indian oil and boom my bike wouldn’t start! The same exact issue. Tank was flushed with water! Since then, I never filled up again at Indian Oil. I can never ever trust it again in my life.”
