A Reddit user has shared a bizarre experience that highlights the unintended consequences of remote work. After being fully remote for two years, the employee found their small apartment slowly turning into a storage unit for their company’s office supplies. The story, which has gone viral online, raises questions about boundaries in remote work arrangements.

From Temporary Help to Full Storage Unit

The ordeal began when the employee’s manager asked them to temporarily store “a couple of extra monitors” at home to manage office inventory. The user agreed, assuming it would be short-term. But within days, a courier arrived with six monitors, a box of cables, and later a giant office chair — all addressed to the employee personally.

“Apparently since I’m ‘remote’ they decided I’m the perfect storage unit,” the employee wrote. “At some point my small living room looked like a thrift store for half broken office gear. Friends would visit and ask if I started flipping equipment on the side.”

The Filing Cabinet That Broke the Camel’s Back

The situation reached its breaking point when the company attempted to send a full metal filing cabinet, weighing more than the employee’s dog, to their one-bedroom apartment.

“No. I absolutely do not have space. I live in a one-bedroom apartment. My workspace is literally a corner next to the window,” the employee explained. They refused the delivery and told their manager that if the company needed storage, they should “rent one like every normal company does.”

The company quickly arranged proper storage in a warehouse, ending the remote worker’s unexpected stint as a corporate storage unit. The incident has sparked discussions about respecting boundaries and treating remote employees’ homes as private spaces rather than free office extensions.
