A recent Reddit post by a user has sparked a discussion about remote work and office presence. The employee revealed that after their company implemented a “two days in office” policy without specifying days, they quietly stopped going in. Despite continuing to meet deadlines and respond to messages, nobody seemed to notice for three months.
Slack and Zoom Replace Office Presence
“So my company did the classic ‘we’re better together’ thing and told everyone to come in two days a week. No specific days, just ‘two days, be visible.’ Fine. I went for the first few weeks, sat alone in a half-empty office, had Zoom meetings with people who were also at home, and realized I was basically commuting to use Slack,” the employee wrote.
The user explained that after one late train, they decided not to go and continued working remotely. “Three months later, I’m still fully remote. My manager even complimented me on ‘being really engaged lately.’ Moral of the story: apparently ‘presence’ just means replying fast enough on Teams.”

Other users weighed in on the situation. One said, “I sat next to my old boss for 8 years. We worked extremely well together and became really good friends after we both left the company. We still get together for lunch once or twice a month to catch up.”
Another user added, “I chose to sit next to my boss because he doesn’t have an excuse to ignore my questions anymore. This is a technical field and he is the only person on site that knows the answers to my questions.”
A third cautioned, “They’ll catch you eventually. Probably around the time they do their annual review, or if you are in contention for a raise/promotion.”
The post highlights the evolving dynamics of hybrid and remote work, raising questions about productivity, engagement, and the real value of physical office presence.
