The Central government has taken action regarding the ongoing layoffs at Infosys’ Mysuru campus, following concerns raised by an IT employees’ welfare association. In response, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has instructed Karnataka’s state labour department to take “urgent and necessary steps” to address the matter.
A ToI report mentioned that a letter from the Office of the Chief Labour Commissioner conveyed the government’s directive for Karnataka to intervene and resolve the dispute, with updates to be provided to both the complainant and the Ministry.
Infosys has faced scrutiny for letting go of around 400 trainees at its Mysuru campus, citing their failure to pass mandatory internal assessments. This decision, implemented on February 7, has sparked criticism from employee unions and industry analysts, with some accusing the company of using performance assessments as a way to cut costs.
Several trainees have expressed frustration, claiming that the assessments were overly difficult and that the time allotted was insufficient to cover the material. Some also mentioned that they were asked to self-study certain topics, further complicating their ability to pass.
