To say that performance of Indian Athletes has been pathetic at 2016 Rio Olympics so far may be harsh, but not inapt. Spirit of sports requires one to appreciate efforts, but to continue that spirit for long an athlete needs to perform and win medals as well. A nation of 1.25 billion people still without a medal, even as over half of the mega event is over, seems quite baffling. The athletes had left for Rio amid much fanfare, including a see off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Among several arguments provided to justify the poor performance of players at the Olympics, one is that Indians do not get proper facilities. For games like Badminton, Tennis and Hockey, this argument doesn’t hold true in anyway. India has world beaters in these games, still they have failed to win medals. Is it the Olympics jitters or just the players’ inability to rise when it matters. Whatever be it, they do need something to keep themselves motivated.
Shah Rukh Khan’s famous ‘sattar minute’ speech in ‘Chak De India’ may prove to be the right dose for athletes who are still in contention for medals at the Olympics.
As the Olympics nears its conclusion, India still have some hopes in some events. India hopes that some of them would get inspired enough to bring smiles to fans of the country.
