Jay Shah, the outgoing secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), officially took over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday. With his appointment, Shah became the fifth Indian to lead the global cricket body.
At the age of 36, He received unanimous approval from the ICC’s Board of Directors for the position. He replaced New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who chose not to seek a third consecutive term.
ICC Chair, Jay Shah said: “I am honoured to be starting in the role of ICC Chair and want to thank the ICC Directors and Member Boards for their support and trust in me to undertake this important role.”
Shah brings over 15 years of experience in cricket administration, having begun his career with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) and the Central Board of Cricket Ahmedabad (CBCA). He then moved on to key leadership roles at the BCCI, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and the ICC.
Shah follows a prestigious line of Indian leaders who have headed the ICC, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, and N Srinivasan.
As the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, the new chairman now faces the challenge of addressing the ICC’s crucial task of implementing the ‘Hybrid Model’ for the Champions Trophy, which was originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan.
In the past, Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar served as Presidents of the ICC, while N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar held the role of Chairman.
