In the wake of the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede that claimed 11 lives, the Karnataka government has removed MLC K Govindaraj from his position as political secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with immediate effect. The move comes amid mounting backlash over the June 4 tragedy during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration, which saw a crowd of over two lakh people overwhelm the venue.

CM Siddaramaiah on Thursday also suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior officials over lapses in crowd management and public safety.

What led to the chaos?

As per PTI, the police attributed the tragedy to confusion over the timing of the parade and the distribution of free passes. This mismanagement, they said, led to overcrowding and panic. The Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 35,000, was flooded by an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people. Many without passes tried to force entry, leading to chaos. Several fans fell or were injured while attempting to climb over the stadium gates.

CM Siddaramaiah confirms casualties

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the death toll and injuries, calling the stampede a tragic incident. He stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation.

Further adding to the disarray, RCB’s management team had posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the victory parade would begin at 5 PM. The post reportedly led to large crowds assembling early and in uncontrolled numbers, worsening the situation.
