Mumbai Indians have received a massive boost ahead of their clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit and available for selection. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed on Sunday that Bumrah, who was sidelined since January due to a stress reaction in his back, has rejoined the squad and trained at full tilt at Wankhede Stadium.

“He’s available, he’s training today, and should be available for the RCB game,” Jayawardene said. Bumrah arrived in Mumbai on Saturday after being cleared by the BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Bumrah was MI’s leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024 with 20 wickets and has been a key pillar of their bowling lineup since 2013. His return comes at a crucial juncture with MI having lost three of their first four games this season. His presence is expected to strengthen an inexperienced bowling unit featuring youngsters like Vignesh Puthur, Ashwani Kumar, and Satyanarayana Raju.

At training, Bumrah bowled alongside Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, troubling the likes of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. MI’s coaching staff, including bowling coach Lasith Malinga, closely monitored his performance.

Jayawardene urged fans to be patient: “Boom’s coming back from a decent layoff, so we need to give him that space. But knowing Jasprit, he’ll be up for it.”

Bumrah’s availability could prove pivotal for MI as they look to bounce back in IPL 2025.
