Simona Halep, the 2014 runner-up, had to battle against Russia’s unseeded Evgeniya Rodina to advance to the second round of the French Open.

The third seed player, who is bidding for her first major title, beat world number 91 Rodina 7-5, 6-4 in the match that lasted for over an hour.

The Romanian said that it was not easy to start a new tournament but was happy to be back in Paris, adding that she had a lot of wonderful memories there, the BBC reported.

Halep will now face either Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia or America’s Lauren Davis in the second round at the Roland Garros.
